Hotel Pick-up in Riobamba

Your adventure begins at 08:30 AM with a pick-up directly from your hotel in Riobamba. We head toward the Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve in a 4WD vehicle, enjoying the changing Andean landscapes as we climb.

Chimborazo Hike to Refuge

We drive to the first shelter, Carrel Brothers (4,850m). From here, we begin a steady hike to the Edward Whymper Shelter (5,030m).

Optional Hike to Condor Cocha Lagoon

For those with extra energy, we offer an optional extension to the Condor Cocha Lagoon (5,100m) for incredible views and perfect acclimatization.

31km Downhill Biking Adventure

After returning to the first shelter, it’s time for the downhill bike ride! We provide bikes and helmets for a 31 km (19 miles) descent through the reserve. The route is a mix of dirt and paved sections, offering a relaxed pace with sightings of wild vicuñas and alpacas.

Return to Riobamba

The biking portion concludes in San Juan (3,200m). From there, we drive you back to your hotel in Riobamba, arriving around 05:00 PM.

Q: Is the Chimborazo bike beginner friendly?

The route is ideal for beginners or those looking for a scenic, easy ride. We do ask for experience with shifting gears of a mountain bike.

Keep in mind that we do require a minimum height of 1,50 meters / 4.92 feet due to the size of our bikes.

Q: Do I need previous mountain biking experience?

The route requires no prior experience, but basic fitness is recommended. 

Q: What altitude will we reach during the tour?

The tour reaches up to 5,100 meters (16,732 feet) at Condor Cocha Lagoon. Biking begins at the Carrel Shelter at 4,850 meters (15,912 feet) and descends to about 3,200 meters (10,498 feet) at San Juan.

Q: How does the altitude affect the ride?

Altitude sickness can affect anyone above 2,500 meters. We recommend spending time at altitude before the tour and drinking plenty of water. Our guides are experienced in recognizing symptoms and will adjust the pace if necessary.

Q: What should I bring for the Biking tour Chimborazo?

Bring warm clothing, layers, and waterproof gear as the weather can change quickly. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, a camera, and a backpack for personal items.

Q: Are there bathrooms along the route?

Bathrooms are available at the Carrel and Whymper shelters. Other than that, bathroom facilities are limited on the biking routes.
