Frequently Asked questions
Cotopaxi Volcano
Q: What time does the Cotopaxi tour start?
The tour departs early to ensure the best weather. We have two meeting points in Quito: Plaza Foch at 07:00 AM and Plaza San Blas at 07:15 AM. Please arrive 10 minutes early.
Q: Are meals included in the Cotopaxi day tour?
Yes. A traditional Ecuadorian lunch (starter, main course, and drink) is included. We recommend bringing your own water and extra snacks for energy during the hike.
Q: Is hiking Cotopaxi suitable for beginners?
Yes. The hike is on a clear trail, and you can walk at your own pace. While you don’t need to be an athlete, a moderate fitness level is helpful because the altitude makes walking more difficult.
Q: What if the Cotopaxi hike is too physically exhausting for me?
Don’t worry! If you feel tired or affected by the altitude, you can stop at any time or return to the tour bus. Our guides are experienced and will support you to ensure you stay safe and comfortable.
Q: What should I bring for the Cotopaxi day tour?
The weather changes quickly, so wear layers! Bring a warm waterproof jacket, gloves, a hat, and sturdy shoes. Because the sun is very strong at high altitudes, sunscreen and sunglasses are essential.
Q: What safety measures are in place for the Cotopaxi day tour?
Your safety is our priority. We use authorized tourist transport and certified bilingual guides. For the biking activity, we provide helmets and high-quality mountain bikes. If you don’t feel comfortable biking, you can stay safely on the bus.
Q: How can I prepare for the Cotopaxi day tour?
To make the most of your Cotopaxi adventure, preparation is key.
1. Acclimatize to the Altitude
Cotopaxi’s high altitude can take a toll on your body if you’re not prepared. Spend at least a day or two in Quito (which is already at 2,850 meters/9,350 feet) to acclimatize. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and take it easy to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
2. Dress in Layers
The weather in Cotopaxi can change rapidly, so it’s essential to dress appropriately. Bring:
- A waterproof jacket and pants
- A thermal base layer
- A fleece or warm sweater
- Gloves and a hat
3. Pack the Essentials
Here’s a checklist of what to bring:
- Sturdy hiking boots
- Sunglasses and sunscreen (the sun is intense at high altitudes)
- A reusable water bottle
- Snacks for extra energy
- A small daypack
4. Stay Hydrated and Energized
Drink water regularly throughout the day and snack on high-energy foods like nuts, dried fruits, or energy bars during the hike.
