Pick-Up and Drive to Chimborazo

Our adventure begins with pick-up from your hotel in Riobamba at 08:30 AM. We’ll drive you by 4WD vehicle to Chimborazo’s first shelter, Carrel Brothers, located at 4,850 meters (15,912 feet). As we climb in altitude, enjoy spectacular mountain views along the way.

Hike to Edward Whymper Shelter & Condor Cocha Lagoon

From Carrel Brothers, we’ll embark on a hike to the Edward Whymper Shelter at 5,030 meters (16,503 feet). For those interested, we offer an optional extended hike to Condor Cocha Lagoon at 5,100 meters (16,732 feet). This hike offers breathtaking views and is an excellent acclimatization opportunity. (1.5 - 2 hours).

Choose Your Route and Begin Downhill Biking

Route 1 - Beginner-Friendly:
Ideal for beginner mountain bikers, this route is a relaxed, scenic descent through Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve. Ride 31 km (19 miles) downhill with varying terrains, including dirt and paved sections, while enjoying sights of vicuñas, alpacas, and local flora. (Total time: 6-7 hours)

Route 2 - Moderate/Exclusive:
This unique route is designed for experienced bikers. The route includes 34 km (21 miles) of mixed terrain with more challenging sections, such as dirt roads, single-tracks, and a few uphills. You’ll pass through dry páramo, farmlands, and local communities, experiencing Chimborazo’s south face and Inca ruins along the way. (Total time: 7-8 hours)

Our tour concludes at San Juan (3,200 meters/10,498 feet), where we’ll end our biking descent. We’ll drive you back to your hotel in Riobamba, marking the end of this unforgettable high-altitude adventure.

Q: Which Chimborazo biking route is best for me?

Route 1 is ideal for beginners or those looking for a scenic, easy ride. We do ask for experience with shifting gears of a mountain bike. Route 2 is more challenging, recommended for those with good physical condition and mountain biking experience.

Keep in mind that we do require a minimum height of 1,50 meters / 4.92 feet due to the size of our bikes.

Q: Do I need previous mountain biking experience?

Route 1 requires no prior experience, but basic fitness is recommended. For Route 2, experience and skill in mountain biking are advisable due to the challenging terrain.

Q: What altitude will we reach during the tour?

The tour reaches up to 5,100 meters (16,732 feet) at Condor Cocha Lagoon. Biking begins at the Carrel Shelter at 4,850 meters (15,912 feet) and descends to about 3,200 meters (10,498 feet) at San Juan.

Q: How does the altitude affect the ride?

Altitude sickness can affect anyone above 2,500 meters. We recommend spending time at altitude before the tour and drinking plenty of water. Our guides are experienced in recognizing symptoms and will adjust the pace if necessary.

Q: What should I bring for the Biking tour Chimborazo?

Bring warm clothing, layers, and waterproof gear as the weather can change quickly. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, a camera, and a backpack for personal items.

Q: Are there bathrooms along the route?

Bathrooms are available at the Carrel and Whymper shelters. Other than that, bathroom facilities are limited on the biking routes.
